Why Choose the Balkans

Why patients choose Weight Loss Surgery in the Balkans

IFSO-certified surgeons

IFSO (International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity) certification is the global gold standard. BalcanCare partners with IFSO-member bariatric programmes in Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania.

All-inclusive packages

Packages include: pre-op labs, consultations, surgery, hospital stay (2–4 nights), nutritionist session, medications, airport transfers and 12 months of remote follow-up.

Laparoscopic technique

100% of procedures at partner hospitals are laparoscopic (keyhole) — 5 small incisions, same-day mobilisation, reduced complication risk and faster recovery.

No NHS weight threshold required

NHS bariatric surgery typically requires BMI 40+ and failed 5-year diet programmes. Private clinics consider BMI 30+ with comorbidities. Access is faster and criteria more flexible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Weight Loss Surgery Abroad — FAQs

What is the minimum BMI for bariatric surgery abroad?

Most partner clinics accept patients with BMI ≥ 30 with at least one obesity-related comorbidity (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea) or BMI ≥ 35 without comorbidities. The final decision is made by the bariatric surgeon after reviewing your medical records.

What is the difference between gastric sleeve and bypass?

Sleeve removes ~75% of the stomach, creating restriction. Average excess weight loss: 60–70%. Bypass connects a small stomach pouch directly to the small intestine, creating both restriction and malabsorption. Average excess weight loss: 70–80%. Bypass has stronger effect on type 2 diabetes but more potential nutritional deficiencies long-term.

How long is the hospital stay?

Gastric sleeve and mini bypass: 2–3 nights. Full RYGB: 3–4 nights. Intragastric balloon: day procedure. Most patients are comfortable to fly 7 days post-surgery for laparoscopic procedures.

Will I need supplements for life after surgery?

Yes — all bariatric patients require lifelong supplementation. After sleeve: multivitamins + B12 + D3 + calcium. After bypass: the above plus iron, zinc and magnesium. Your nutritionist will create a personalised supplement plan.

Is hair loss after bariatric surgery normal?

Temporary hair loss (telogen effluvium) affects 30–50% of patients at 3–6 months post-op and is caused by rapid weight loss and nutritional changes. It is almost always reversible by 12 months with proper protein intake and supplementation.

What happens if I regain weight after surgery?

Some weight regain is normal at 2–5 years, especially without lifestyle changes. Revision surgery (sleeve to bypass conversion) or endoscopic procedures can restore restriction. Ongoing nutritional coaching is included in our packages.
